The handbrake cable connects the handbrake operating lever or pedal to the rear brakes or – on some models – a separate set of brake shoes which prevent the vehicle from moving whilst parked. The handbrake cable needs to be of the correct length for the vehicle and have secure connections at both ends. Attention should be paid to evidence of any excessive movement of the handbrake lever and adjustments made as this will indicate stretching of the cable. The cable should be replaced once the available adjustment range has been reached. The correct adjustment and operation of the handbrake cable is an MOT item.
